The Highway & Sanitation Division provides all of the maintenance for the town’s 195 miles of streets.  The division is responsible for painting lines and crosswalks.  The division installs and maintains all of the street and warning signs.  The division cleans and maintains drainage catch basins.  They sweep the streets, patch potholes, oil and crack seal streets, and supervise the paving of streets.  This division is responsible for all residential and municipal trash pick-up as well as maintaining the town recycling center.  This division also operates the town’s gravel pit.  In winter, the Highway Division plows and sands streets and parking lots (including schools) during snowstorms. The division is responsible for the maintenance of the Storm Water Management program required by the EPA. This division also provides support to other divisions such as Water/Sewer and LF & NR.  This division consists of twenty-six employees.


CHANGE IN YARDWASTE COLLECTION

YARD WASTE COLLECTION SCHEDULE

The Town of Natick, Department of Public Works, announces the Fall 2009 curbside Yard Waste Collection Schedule.  

Due to budget cuts yard waste will be picked up ONE TIME ONLY for each trash collection day.

Yard waste will be picked up on Monday, 11-16-09 for Tuesday’s trash collection day.

Yard waste will be picked up on Monday, 11-23-09 for Wednesday’s trash collection day.

Yard waste will be picked up on Monday, 11-30-09, for Thursday’s trash collection day.

Yard waste will be picked up on Monday, 12-7-09, for Friday’s trash collection day.

Residents are reminded to have their yard waste, trash and recycling at the curb by 7:00 AM.

Residents are also reminded that yard waste must be in paper biodegradable bags or in trash barrels clearly marked “Yard Waste”.  

PLASTIC BAGS WILL NOT BE COLLECTED.  

Yard waste can also be brought to the Recycling Center throughout the year.   The Recycling Center is open Saturday and Sunday 8:00 AM – 3:30 PM.

HOUSEHOLD RUBBISH

As of July 1, 2003, the Town of Natick has implemented the Pay-As-You-Throw (PAYT) Program for household rubbish collection. All household trash MUST BE placed in the Natick PAYT bags.  Bags will be sold in 10 packs and two sizes:  a 30 gallon size capable of holding up to 25 pounds and a 15 gallon size capable of holding up to 12 pounds of trash.  Bags are available at:

A.      All household rubbish must be in Natick PAYT bag.  The PAYT bag may be placed in a barrel to protect it from wild life while waiting for pickup.  The Natick PAYT bag must be easy to pull out of the barrel or it will not be collected.  Trash in barrel with a commercial trash bag liner or no liner will not be collected.  

B.      All containers and/or bags must be out at curbside by 7:00 AM on collection day.  The collection trucks will pass down each street once and will not return for late collections.  Property owners are responsible for cleaning up any rubbish caused by animals, etc.




BULKY WASTE

The Town of Natick provides bulky waste pickups every Monday, except holidays, for a minimum fee of twenty-five dollars.  Additional fees will be charged for large volumes of waste.  To sign up for a pickup you must present an itemized list of the objects for pickup.  Payment in either cash or check for the appropriate quoted amount must be mailed or delivered to the Department of Public Works on or prior to the Thursday before the Monday pickup.  Pickup dates for each month are available by calling the Department of Public Works or the Sanitation Division.

ITEMS THAT QUALIFY FOR BULKY WASTE PICKUPS ARE AS FOLLOWS:

Sofas, chairs, tables, entertainment stands, rugs, padding, mattresses, box springs, tires and shutters.  All other items may be inquired about at the Department of Public Works.

Metal Items such as:
Lawn mowers, snow blowers, portable televisions, microwaves, storm doors, shower doors, windows, swing sets and grills*.  All other items may be inquired about at the Department of Public Works.
*Propane Tanks can be picked up on the bulky waste collection schedule for an additional charge of $5.00 per tank which you must pay in advance.  

Wood
Must be cut down to a length of no longer than four feet.

Fencing
Fence posts must be cut down to a length of four feet.  Sections of stockade fencing must be cut in half.  Pricing will vary depending on the amount of fence.  A call must be made to the DPW in advance before the pickup you are interested in, in order for the Sanitation Supervisor or General Foreman to make an estimate of the cost for pickup.

Appliances $25.00/each:
Refrigerators, freezers, stoves, dishwashers, washing machines, dryers, water heaters, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, televisions, computers and computer monitors.  All other items may be inquired about at the Department of Public Works.

Large quantities of trash such as basement, attic and apartment cleanouts will be picked up on the same schedule as above.  The Sanitation Supervisor or General Foreman will view the material for pickup and estimate the collection cost to report to the property owner.  Sufficient notice must be given to the Sanitation Division in order to arrange an appointment.

The Town of Natick will not accept any building demolition or remodeling materials.  This includes but is not limited to sinks, tubs, toilets, tile, asphalt, concrete, bricks, sheetrock, plaster, etc.  It will be the responsibility of the property owner to properly dispose of this material.  Residents may find disposal options in the Yellow Pages under “Rubbish Removal” or the Classified Ad section of the local papers.


RECYCLING

Recycling Center is located on West Street, Corner of Route 27
Hours are Saturday & Sunday 8:00 AM – 3:30 PM

A.      All cardboard and boxes must be broken down to 2’ x 2’, tied and put out with the  recycling or you can bring flattened cardboard and boxes to the Recycling Center.  Cardboard and boxes cannot be picked up with regular trash.

B.      Fluorescent light bulbs, thermometers, thermostats and any other items containing mercury are prohibited from disposal.  You can bring these items to the Recycling Center for recycling.

C.      Household batteries, including alkaline, nickel cadmium and rechargeable batteries are also prohibited from disposal.  You can bring them to the Recycling Center for recycling.

D.      Paint – Paint Swap Shed will close indefinitely June 1, 2009


YARD WASTE

Throughout the year, there is a composting area at the Recycling Center on West Street, where residents can dispose of their yard waste. Hours of operation are Saturday and Sunday 8:00am-3:30pm only.

Yard waste at the Recycling Center Information:

A.      All vehicles using the yard waste facility must display a resident sticker or a one – time permission slip as provided for below.  Proof of residency is required.  Residency sticker may be obtained at the Recycling Center.  One time permission slips can be obtained at the Department of Public Works.

B.      Passenger cars, cars with trailers and pickup trucks without trailers, (no dump trucks, regardless of size) will be allowed unlimited use of the facility.  Included in this group of vehicles would be station wagons and any sport utility vehicles, such as jeeps, explorers and suburbans.  This includes vehicles owned or leased by Natick residents.

C.      A resident can use company-owned, rental or borrowed trucks, including those registered in another town to dispose of Natick generated yard waste if a one time permission slip is obtained from the DPW prior to the disposal date.  Each permission slip will be valid for one calendar week only unless otherwise approved by the DPW.  Office hours for the DPW are Monday through Friday 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM.

D.      Logs no greater than 8” in diameter will be accepted.  Lumber, stumps and fencing will not be accepted.  See attendant for additional directions and information.
