PERMIT TO DO ALTERATION
WORK
Alterations: Additions,
Decks, Garages, Pools, Sheds, Signs, Woodstoves, Interior (windows, finish
basements, etc.) and Exterior (vinyl siding, roof work, etc.)
Application To Be Filled Out Completely
This
includes: Address, Contractor (if
owner, write “self”), Homeowner’s signature, contractor’s signature and
licenses (State and Home Improvement License).
Section E: type of work being done, i.e., 14’ x 12’ deck; 17’ x 16’
addition.)
§
Application to be signed
off by Department of Public Works
if permit is for an addition, deck, porch, garage or pool.
§
Application to be signed off by Board of Health if
property has septic system and if constructing an addition.
Certificate of Insurance must be attached to application.
Plot Plans required for:
additions, pools, fences, decks, garages, sheds, etc. Proposed work must be drawn to scale --
no reduced or enlarged plans. If
unable to obtain a plot plan, have the property surveyed. A plot plan is a layout of the property and
structures, and is stamped and sealed by a professional surveyor. Addition, deck, etc. must be drawn on the
plot plan to scale with the correct distances to the lot lines and other
structures.
Energy Compliance Report: To be
submitted with applications for additions (forms available in the Building
Department).
Plans: Two sets
of plans must be submitted.

Bedroom
addition – Fire Department to stamp
and locate smoke detectors on the plans
before submitting them to the Building Inspector.
Additions:
§
The plans consist of
front view, side view and back view.
§
Framing
plans – include all lumber
sizes, spacing on center, sheathing sizes, foundation, footing sizes &
depth, insulation, ventilation of roof, window sizes (if egress), roof covering,
etc. If the plans are unusable in
design or has steel, trusses, etc., the plans are to be stamped and sealed by a
professional engineer or architect. If
the plans have architect’s or engineer’s name on them, they must be stamped and
signed by that architect or engineer.
Decks and Porches:
§
Framing plans -- include lumber sizes, spacing, footing
sizes and depth, railing heights.
Pools:
§
Specifications from
the manufacturer.
§
Fence permit must be
applied for (new State regulations for fences around pools)
Woodstoves:
§
Complete the
additional information sheet on woodstoves and submit with application.
Fee: $10.00
per thousand (rounded up) Fee is based
upon cost of improvement (do not include electrical or plumbing costs) and
HVAC.
