Preparing For Extreme Cold Temperatures

With the continuing extreme cold temperatures the Town of Natick Water Division would like to remind home owners to be prepared.

  • Check the water services and meters inside your home. Make sure drafts around the meters are sealed and areas are heated or insulated.
  • If your water service has frozen in the past run a slow stream of water to keep the water moving. Moving water helps prevent pipes from freezing.
  • Most water services freeze when home owners go away for a few days. If you plan on leaving your home for more than a day, have some one visit the home to run some water or leave a
small stream of water running. Alternatively turn off the water closest to the water meter and leave the home heating system set to a higher temperature.
  • Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. You may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much more costly repair job if pipes freeze and
    burst.
  • Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.
  • Keep open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors if along an exterior wall. This will allow warm air to circulate around piping.
  • If you have any questions please contact the Natick Water Division at 508-647- 6557.
